With the flight of a mathematician and the trap-setting patience of a grandmaster, Erapalli Anantharao Srinivasa Prasanna transformed off-spin into a thrilling game of physical chess. Born on May 22, 1940, in Bangalore, Karnataka, the master craftsman was universally regarded as having the finest loop and flight in international cricket. Rather than relying on seam movement or drastic surface turn, Prasanna weaponised air dynamics, tantalizing batters by holding the ball up in the breeze before forcing it to drop shorter and faster than anticipated. His international journey began when he made his Test debut against England at Chennai in January 1962, though he subsequently stepped away from the game for nearly five years to complete his degree in engineering before returning to lead India's spin revolution.

Upon his return, Prasanna reached his absolute zenith during the 1967–68 twin tours of Australia and New Zealand, orchestrating mesmerizing spells that redefined India's away record. In Australia, he showcased his supreme skill on true, hard surfaces, capturing 25 wickets across four Tests. He immediately followed that with 24 wickets in four Tests in New Zealand, culminating in a decisive second-innings spell of 6 for 94 in the first Test at Dunedin that drove India to a historic five-wicket victory, their first-ever Test win on foreign soil.
