Bresnan sustained a stress fracture to his left foot in England's eight-wicket win in the first test at Lord's.
The England and Wales Cricket Board says it should know later this week how long Bresnan will be out.

National selector Geoff Miller says that "his bowling benefited from five days of test cricket ... and he would have been looking forward to getting more overs under his belt at Old Trafford." Bresnan took four wickets at Lord's.

The 32-year-old Sidebottom was in the squad that won the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean last month. The second test starts on Friday.
