Watch: Kohli and Shami's totally unmissable exchange after India pacer takes single off last ball to deny Virat strike

If you think Virat Kohli's cold stare at Hardik Pandya for denying a second run was the only time the former India captain disagreed with his teammate's judgment, you got another thing coming.

If you think Virat Kohli's cold stare at Hardik Pandya for denying a second run was the only time the former India captain disagreed with his teammate's judgment, you got another thing coming. Kohli was, more than once, not on board with what his batting partner had to say as far as running between the wicket is concerned. Towards the end of India's innings against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI at Guwahati on Tuesday, Kohli and Shami did not see eye to eye on Mohammed Shami's decision to take a single.

The reason was simple. It was the last ball of the over – the 48th. With India bossing the innings having already reached 362/6, the possibility of 400 lurked with 13 balls left and Kohli still batting. However, off the final delivery of the over, Shami, facing his first ball, pulled a short ball towards fine leg and ran a single, denying Kohli strike in the next over. Immediately Kohli looked up towards Shami, gave him a snarky look and resumed proceedings.

What happened on the first ball of the 49th over was even more amusing. Shami carefully read a slower delivery from Kasun Rajitha and carefully guided the ball through the vacant area on the on-side to take the single. And upon its completion, Kohli and Shami had jest-filled exchange. As Kohli got ready to take strike, the camera panned towards Shami at the non-striker's end, who was seen laughing and mouthing a few words to his former captain. He then made a gesture with the bat perhaps indicating that he could have hit the previous ball for a lot more. Kohli responded with a laugh of his own and faced Rajitha, only to get out the next ball.

Kohli perished but it wasn't before he had smashed his 45th ODI ton and completed back-to-back centuries, the 10th time he has done so and the first instance after 29 months. Throughout the match, Kohli was highly entertaining. First, when Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were going great guns, an eager to bat Kohli was itching sitting in the dugout, having fun with his teammates and giving his verdict on DRS calls.

Shami remained not out till the end, scoring 4 off 4 as India ended on a powerful 373/7, their join second-highest total against Sri Lanka in ODIs. Later, with the ball, Shami took 1/67 dismissing the well-set Dhananjaya de Silva for 47.
