Communal tension gripped Raiwala, a town near Haridwar, in Uttarakhand on Friday, two days after the body of a Hindu man, who was allegedly having an affair with a Muslim woman, was found on railway tracks on Tuesday night.

Lakshman Singh Kalura (34), a married man with three kids, was allegedly having affair with the daughter of his employer, a poultry farm owner, Islam Ahmad, who sacked him on learning of the affair. But Kalura continued to meet the woman.

On Tuesday night, his body was found on the tracks. Tension erupted after state Assembly speaker Premchandra Agarwal visited the area and local police station around Thursday noon.

Police have arrested Islam and his son Salman and booked them under murder charges, in a bid to calm down the agitating mob and right-wing activists, who set afire some vegetable shops owned by Muslims in Rishikesh, the speaker’s constituency, besides taking out a march in Raiwala town on Friday, shouting slogans against the police, demanding death sentence for the culprits.

Attempts to contact Islam’s daughter turned futile as the police have secured their house.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the town and adequate forces deployed to control the situation, SP (rural), Dehradun district, Sarita Dobhal said.

In July this year, Uttarakhand witnessed communal tension in Satpuli town in Pauri Garhwal district, which had no past history of religious clash.

In the following months, at least three more incidents in other towns of the district involving Hindus and Muslims were reported. Politically-aligned religious groups have played a pivotal role in fanning the tensions.
