Dehradun: The state leadership in the Samajwadi Party wants ND Tiwari to contest from the Nainital Lok Sabha seat so as to enhance the prestige of the party in the hill state and give it the strength that has been lacking all these years. This, when the SP has already given a ticket to Avtar Singh on this seat.
The local leaders say that they want ND Tiwari to contest on their official symbol and not as an independent supported by the Samajwadi Party. The party has won the Nainital and Haridwar seat in the past, but has remained unrepresented in the Lok Sabha from Uttarakhand since a long time.
At present, the SP has been facing another crisis of sorts in the state with the cancellation of the ticket of Neeraj Chauhan on the Tehri seat after he was sent to jail in the much hyped JP Joshi blackmailing case.
The party’s official candidate from Haridwar Ajmal Nawaz Khan shot himself in the head over some issue and is in a semi-conscious state in the hospital. In this situation, the party can only hope for a strong face on the Lok Sabha seat that could provide the much needed succour to the party here.
SP state chief Satyanarayan Sachan said that he held talks with the SP supremo over the issue. “There is a consensus that Tiwari’s candidature would strengthen the party and we would request him to do so,” said Sachan. Sachan said that Tiwari is expected to begin the tour of Kumaon area from March 10 and they would request him to contest from the Nainital seat.
