A Class 12 student was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting his teacher at a Delhi government school in south west Delhi.
Suresh Yadav, who teaches commerce to Class 11 and 12 students, was taking a class at the government boys’ senior secondary school in Sagarpur on Thursday when the incident happened.
“I was teaching Class 12 (A) when he(student) came inside the classroom. When I asked him to return to his class, he attacked and punched me on the face in front of the class,” said Yadav.
Yadav said directorate of education officials were present inside the school when the incident happened.
“The deputy director of education and some other officials present in the school initially discussed about rusticating him but I said he should be allowed to study as the class 12 Board exams are just a few months away,” he said.
The teacher said that on Wednesday, some kids were taken for a local tour when the 18-year-old student and some other students were scolded by some teachers for ‘creating trouble’ and sent them to him. Yadav said he did not scold the boy.
On Thursday, after he attacked Yadav, the school’s principal Dharam Raj filed a police complaint against the student and said that he is not a minor.
Milind Dumbere, deputy commissioner of police (south west) said, “We registered a case of obstructing, assaulting and voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant in discharge of public functions. He has been arrested.”
Last year, in September, two Class 12 students allegedly stabbed a government schoolteacher after he complained to their parents about their indiscipline. Mukesh Kumar, a Hindi teacher, later died.
Over the past few years, there have been quite a few incidents of teachers being assaulted by students.
In March 2015, a principal at Tughlaqabad was attacked by a student and was left bleeding from his ears. The student had vandalised the school property.
In 2014, a teacher in Madanpur Khadar had to be admitted to hospital after he was beaten by parents and students.
In 2011, an eighth standard student in Rohini pulled a 58-year-old teacher by her hair, kicked her and slashed her chin with a sharp object after she asked him to submit his notes during an exam and stop talking loudly. Other teachers had to intervene to rescue her.
