Durga Puja: This pandal is set to celebrate success stories of Indian female icons
Inspired by a tweet by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this Durga Puja Pandal will be celebrating the success stories of Indian female icons.
Durga Puja is not just a celebration of Goddess Durga, but also of women power. And, a pandal in town is all set to take it a step further. Matri Mandir Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti in Safdurjung Enclave which has been organising the pujo since the past 51 years will be showcasing the success stories of legendary Indian women from various fields.
Themed ‘Nari Shakti’ this year’s celebration will be all about women power and will feature eminent names such as Mother Teresa, Kalpana Chawla, PT Usha, Mary Kom, the Indian women’s cricket team, Indian women’s hockey team, PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar, Lata Mangeshkar, Suchitra Sen, Deepika Kumari, Deepa Malik and Anjali Bhagwat, among others as part of the pandal decor. The preparations of the pandal began early on, and Sunil Das, a native of Medinipur (West Bengal) has been working on the final details of the grand mandap along with 80 other artisans.
“We had been planning to do a similar theme since long, and the idea got strength when we saw a tweet by Prime Minister Modi that talked about women empowerment. All of these strong-willed women have not only succeeded in their respective field but have also made great contributions towards our country. Our pandal pays respect to that, and there cannot be a better way to do so,” says Debashis Saha, general secretary of the Matri Mandir Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti. “Out of the long list of important women we will showcase in our pandal, a special mention will be of Poorna, the tribal girl who conquered Mount Everest at the age of 13.”
In the past 50 years, the Puja has won many accolades and awards and has seen a long list of eminent personalities grace the pandal with their presence, some of which include names such as BJP President Amit Shah, Union Minister Babul Supriyo, and cricketers VVS Laxman, Mohammed Kaif, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag. The pujo has also recieved a big thumbs up from Bollywood’s very own Shehenshah, Amitabh Bachchan for their theme this year.
Apart from its decorations, the pandal also expects huge crowd to visit because of what they have planned on the cultural front. “The evening of Maha Saptami will culminate with a grand show titled, Remembering Pancham, which will see a performance by the original band of the legendary R.D.Burman. On Maha Navami, we have organized exclusive cultural show where Union Minister Babul Supriyo, a famous name in Bollywood and the Kolkata film industry will be performing live,” says Saha. “We also plan to felicitate a few of the women achievers at the event.”
