Manish Sisodia urges Delhi University vice-chancellor to extend tenure of college governing bodies
The move comes after the tenure of the governing bodies (GBs) of 28 state government-funded colleges got over on March 8.
Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday again urged the Delhi University (DU) vice-chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi, to extend the tenure of the governing bodies of all state government-funded colleges of the varsity by three months with an immediate effect.
The move comes after the tenure of the governing bodies (GBs) of 28 state government-funded colleges got over on March 8. The GBs are responsible to take all decision regarding the smooth functioning of a college, including in the appointment process.
Sisodia had written a letter to Tyagi on February 20 wherein he requested him to extend the term of the GBs of these colleges by three months, citing ordinance XVIII (3) (1) of the Delhi University act. The extension has not been announced as of now.
Terming the delay a “politically targeted move”, Sisodia, in his letter to Tyagi on Wednesday, said, “Delhi University has followed a well established convention of extending the tenure of governing bodies but this has not been observed in instant case. Sidelining the Delhi government nominees in the governing bodies of Delhi government- funded colleges by not extending the tenure is a politically targeted move. The political overtone in this whole process is quite palpable and is not expected from your high academic office.”
“So, I again request you to extend the tenure of the GBs by three months wef March 9,2019 under the concerned statutory provision without any further delay,” he said in the Wednesday’s letter.
Despite several attempts by HT, the DU vice-chancellor did not respond to calls and texts for a comment. An official in the administration said that the university might take some decision on the extension by the next week.
