No-show by singer Mankirt Aulakh at DCAC’s fest Ambrosia, disappoints students

Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh cancelled his gig at Delhi College of Arts and Commerce at the last minute, citing ‘severe lack of security’ at Ambrosia ‘18, the college’s annual cultural fest.

The Delhi College of Arts and Commerce had to face great disappointment and embarrassment, recently. The student organisers of their annual fest, Ambrosia ’18, booked Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh, made the payment to the star, and the singer arrived at the venue to perform. Yet, there was a no-show, as the singer felt that the security arrangements were not up to the mark. The singer had even posted a video about his upcoming performance on Facebook.

However, on Wednesday eve, according to an eye witness (a college student who was there to attend the gig), “When the singer arrived at the venue, his initial excitement of seeing a sea of fans turned into a nightmare when the absence of proper security measures led to fans climbing onto his car and creating a ruckus. The singer had to back out due to security concerns, which could’ve (and would’ve) led to a host of problems for the performer and the crowd that had come to see him.”

“Be it a small artist or a star like Aulakh, proper measures need to be taken when organising such mass scale events. He decided to cancel because he didn’t want anyone in the audience to get harmed because of the situation in the college,” the member added.

“Itna hype kar diya, lag raha tha DCAC ne iss baar to kamaal hi kar diya Mankirt ko bulaake. Ab idhar aake dikh gaya ki fail kya cheez hoti hai. Ghar jaake hi sun lengey iske gaane ab. So, so disappointed, I really wanted to see him perform live,” said Tanveer Dang, a student who had come to attend the gig. “Jab sambhaal nahi sakte itne bade stars, toh fest rakhte kyon hain yeh log? Inko koi normal sa band hi bula lena chahiye tha last year ki tarah, at least chal to jaata. Ab pata nahin kab dekh paaunga Mankirt ko perform karte huye. Achcha fest to expect kar hi nahi sakte, faaltu mein expectations badha di (Why organise these fests if you can’t handle big stars? They should have called just another regular band like last year. I don’t know when I will get to see Mankirt perform next. Why did they have to raise our expectations),” said Abhimanyu Sethi, another attendee who couldn’t even enter the venue.

We tried reaching Abhishek Dhanola, Lokesh Goel and Anmol Jindal from the college union, but they were unavailable for comment at that time.
