A 25-year-old woman’s body was found in an almirah at her home in north-east Delhi’s Gokalpuri on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Her feet were tied using a rope and marks on neck suggested she was strangulated, said an investigator. Though her clothes were found intact, the police have not ruled out sexual assault before the murder.

The police have detained a local resident, who had called the police to inform about the murder. According to a police officer, the caller is a married man with four children, but while calling police he said that his “wife” had been murdered and stuffed in the almirah.

The woman lived in a one-room set in Chand Bagh in Gokalpuri where she had moved less than a year ago. She worked as a data operator at a private firm in east Delhi.

The murder came to light around 2.30 pm on Thursday when police received the call about the death. “We reached the spot to find the woman’s body stuffed in the middle rack of a small steel almirah that had a few clothes,” said an investigator.

“The body had begun decomposing and it appears she was killed at least 36 hours before we got to know of the murder,” said the officer.

The police immediately detained the man who had informed about the death. “He has been repeatedly changing his statements, drawing our suspicion. He first called us to say the woman murdered is his wife, but later said he only knew her as a friend,” said the officer.

The police are probing the nature of relationship between the dead woman and the detained man even as it has emerged that the duo was often seen quarrelling. Though police said he was the prime suspect in the murder, he was yet to be arrested until late Thursday night.

Atul Kumar Thakur, deputy commissioner of police (north-east), said a murder case has been registered at Gokalpuri police station.
