But the victim’s family lodged an FIR against her school friend, a minor, alleging that she, along with a few others, poured kerosene over the victim and set her on fire.

Police lodged a case of murder against the minor, and her unidentified friends. Officials said the victim, Anuradha Patel, and the accused, studied together in Modi Nagar and cleared their 10+2 examination. Later, Anuradha registered for a BTech course at a college in Meerut.

“Her friend called up several times on July 13. My daughter left the house around 9.30am on the day of the incident to visit her house in Meerut. My daughter got a registration in the college and attended the college for a day earlier. The accused was pressuring my daughter to take admission in a different college ...,” said Kalpana Patel, mother of the victim.

In their complaint to the police, the victim’ s family alleged that just before the incident, the accused called up Anuradha’s mother and asked her whether she had reached home or not.

Afterwards, someone called up from Anuradha’s mobile and told her that her daughter was injured. The girl was then referred to a hospital, but succumbed to her injuries midway.

In their complaint, her family alleged that just before she died, she told them that the accused and her friends set her on fire.

Police said the accused girl has denied any involvement.

“We tracked her mobile phone locations which indicated that the accused was present in Meerut when the incident took place at Modi Nagar. Both girls were talking to each other just before the incident. We are investigating the matter,” said Brijesh Kumar Sharma, station house officer at Modi Nagar. Police said the victim died of injuries as indicated by the postmortem report.
