NEW DELHI: The first speaker of the Delhi Assembly and the father of Union minister Vijay Goel, Charti Lal Goel, died after prolonged illness on Tuesday.

Eighty nine-year-old Goel, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and was cremated at Nigambodh Ghat.
“Spoke to @VijayGoelBJP & condoled the demise of his father Shri Charti Lal Goel, whose rich contribution to public life will be remembered,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
Senior BJP leaders, Delhi assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel and Delhi’s deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, among others, visited the residence of the late speaker and paid their respects.
Recalling Charti Lal’s services as the Speaker of Assembly, Ram Niwas Goel said that his leadership to Vidhan Sabha in its formative years (1993-98) continues to inspire the institution.
His condolence meet will be held on Sunday.
Goel was born in Jharot village in Rohtak, Haryana, and was a founding member of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh in 1951.
