10,000 staffers in training for T3

In about three months from now, the Delhi airport will have a new address. Most flight operations are going to shift to the upcoming Terminal 3 from July and more than 10,000 airport personnel are being trained to work at the state-of-the-art facility, reports Sidhartha Roy.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 —which will handle all international and most domestic flights — is expected to open on July 3. Private airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) is already running a training programme for all operational staff to familiarise them with the new facilities and systems.

“We are not only training airport operation’s staff but also personnel belonging to the airlines, ground handlers and government agencies like Central Industrial Security Force, Immigration, Customs etc, who will be working at the new terminal,” a DIAL spokesman said.

“In these classroom training sessions, airport personnel are made familiar with the airport layout with particular emphasis on way-finding and the locations of their new offices and workplaces,” he said.

Airport employees will also be prepared to handle special arrangements during the Commonwealth Games in October when large number of foreign athletes, officials and dignitaries land at the airport. With the terminal spread over 5.4 million square feet, smooth emergency evacuation is also part of the training programme.

DIAL has been carrying out trial runs at the new terminal from January and advance trials will begin from next month.
