For government employees looking forward to combining leaves on Fridays and Monday for a long weekend, here is what’s in store in 2009.

The longest holiday of four days will be in December as Christmas falls on Friday and Muharram on Monday and in between will be a Saturday and a Sunday.

The employees will also have three days’ off in a row on at least eight occasions due to the holidays falling on either Friday or Monday while Saturdays and Sundays are already off days for the employees.

In all, the Central government has finalised 18 holidays for its staff during 2009, though they cannot not benefit from four that fall on Saturdays.

For the employees in Delhi, the government has notified all the 18 holidays while fixing only 15 for those working in the states. Three other holidays are to be decided in consultation with the Central government employees welfare coordination committee.

Four holidays that fall on Saturdays are: Buddha Purnima on May 9, Independence Day on August 15, Diwali on October 17 and Id-ul-Zuha on November 28. There will be two holidays for Muharram as it falls on January 8 and again on December 28.
