2 more docs booked by CBI for fudging records

The CBI has charged Safdarjung hospital's two senior doctors, along with unidentified officials of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (co-accused in the case) for allegedly faking records and entering into a criminal conspiracy to get government approvals for a private medical college in Indore.

The two doctors, Dr DK Gupta and Dr JS Dhupia, according to CBI's first information report, forged records to seek the ministry's approvals for the Indore-based Index Medical College in September 2008 after the Medical Council of India (MCI) had already denied it.

The college was seeking the MCI's permission to begin admissions for its second batch.

Challenging MCI's rejection, the college had appealed to the Supreme Court, which instructed the ministry as well as the MCI to conduct inspection of the college's facilities afresh and inform the court on September 26, 2008.

Though the MCI inspection team gave a negative report regarding the same, the two suspects, Dr Gupta and Dr Dhupia okayed its eligibility for the approvals it was seeking.

The agency suspects that the two doctors, unknown ministry officials and MCI officials were allegedly acting according to a plan: first deny a private college its approval, then demand bribes to grant the same.
