The crime branch of Delhi Police recovered two more children including an infant on Wednesday from one of the four accused who were arrested earlier this week for running an adoption racket in the Capital, police said.

On Monday, police arrested the accused identified as Dr Atul Kumar, Pawan Sharma, Shobha Gupta and Ranjita Bhasin, who used to buy children from poor parents across the country and sell them to childless couples in the city. Police had recovered two infants then.

On Wednesday, police recovered a one-year-old girl from Rani Bagh area of west Delhi who was allegedly sold by Sharma for R50,000.

Another victim - a three-and-half-year-old girl was also recovered at the instance of Sharma from the house of one of his relatives.

“We recovered the children at the instance of Sharma who is in our custody. We have also contacted the authorities concerned to take action against the NGO, the two other accused were running illegally,” said Ashok Chand, DCP (crime).

On being interrogated, the two disclosed names of the other people involved in the racket. Gupta and Kumar were arrested later.

Bhasin was running two organizations — Nav Roshini Chetna Mahilla Samiti and Nav Jyoti Anathalaya, since 1998. She had given an infant girl to Gupta 10 days ago.

The girl was bought for R30,000 and was in the process of being sold for R1.8 lakh.

Sharma, who procured children got R25, 000, Bhasin received R10,000, Gupta R75,000 and Kumar was given R20,000.
