The Reliance oil refinery in Jamnagar has been finally provided with a 200-strong squad of CISF which will cover the sprawling campus from sea and city side to thwart any attempt from terrorists.
A simple ceremony was held at the campus in which CISF took control of the strategic locations at the Jamnagar refinery, a home ministry official said today.
The ministry had given in-principle approval for providing CISF cover to the refinery owned by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) nearly a year ago.
The refinery is believed to be the world's largest greenfield oil refinery.
While the CISF personnel have excused themselves from access control duties, the commandos equipped with sophisticated weapons will be performing the role of Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) besides guarding the refinery from sea and the city side, the official said.
RIL had conveyed to the Union Home Ministry last year that it was keen to take CISF security cover for the refinery for its fool-proof protection.
RIL, which was among the first private companies to seek protection from CISF after the government's announcement that the paramilitary forces would be available for guarding private installations, had informed the Home Ministry in July last year that it was reconsidering the request after the strength of personnel was brought down by the government from 2000 to 200.

{{/usCountry}}However, the company recently made up its mind and subsequently informed the ministry that it was ready to take the CISF security cover.
Central security agencies carried out exhaustive survey of the installation and decided to provide 200 personnel for it. Besides guarding, these personnel will provide training to security personnel of Reliance.
The security cover for vital private installations was felt following intelligence reports that Pakistan-based terrorists might try to target these establishments by launching surprise attacks similar to the one in Mumbai.
The Centre has expanded the role of CISF from guarding government establishments to providing security to private installations in the wake of the 26/11 attacks.
The Jamnagar refinery is close to the Indo-Pak border in Gujarat which makes it vulnerable to terrorist attacks from the neighbouring country.
