A project to ensure this was announced by NDMC in its budget for 2011-12 on Friday. Under the project, the civic agency will aim at reducing overall wastage and make its distribution network more efficient.

While a detailed proposal is yet to be made, the civic agency plans to use modern software to assess the gaps in its network and devise ways of breaching them.

The civic agency has started the process of identifying consultant for this project.

“We plan to start work on ground from next year. We hope to get Delhi government and Ministry of Urban Development’s support in this. We are also trying to get funds under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM),” said Parimal Rai, NDMC chairman.

Rai added that a JNNURM consultant may be used to get the study done for the project. The civic agency is yet to ascertain the cost of the project but according to officials, it could run into ‘Rs200 to Rs300 crore’.

“A software will be used, which will help assess the gaps in the network and suggest ways of filling them. The project will require upgrading of network that has already been done in most areas of NDMC. We also have to take the Central Public Works Department on board, as they are one of the biggest stakeholders,” added Rai.
