According to police, the accident took place around 10.30pm on the Aurangzeb Road after the occupants apparently jumped a traffic signal. No case, however, was registered.
"The speed of the Range Rover was so high that after hitting a Corolla vehicle in front of it, the SUV rammed into the adjacent divider and overturned several times before bursting into flames, even as its occupants crawled out of it," said a senior police officer.
According to police, two fire tenders reached the area within minutes and took half-an-hour to douse the fire, while the accused trio fled the scene.
The driver of the Range Rover, later identified as Devender, told the police that they had been trying to save a person crossing the street. "The matter was resolved among the parties concerned, so no case was registered," said KC Dwivedi, additional CP (New Delhi).
