A 62-year-old woman was found bound, gagged and murdered in her north Delhi flat on Tuesday afternoon, less than two hours before she was expected at an event organised by the police to honour senior citizens.

Police say Madhu Mehra, a government school teacher, may have been murdered at her Timarpur residence on the night of October 1, celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Older Persons.
“According to neighbours, Mehra was last seen at the local market at 9.30pm on Monday. Circumstantial evidence suggests she was murdered just when she was about to go to bed,” an investigating officer said.
Described as a loner by the local police, who had her on their local senior citizen roster, as well her neighbours, Mehra was found strangled in her second-floor flat at 2.40pm. She had lived alone for most of her 15-year long stay at the locality after both her husband and her son were killed in separate road accidents 15 years apart.
“It seems like a case of robbery and murder,” Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police (north), said.
