A fast track court has sentenced a retired 70-year-old police official to 10 years’ imprisonment for raping a woman several times inside a police station 15 years ago.

Additional sessions Judge Virender Bhat said the accused deserve no leniency, as he used his position and power to commit the offence. Sentencing the accused, the judge said" In my opinion, in order to avoid recurrence of the incidents of rape, it is absolutely necessary to ignore insignificant mitigating factors and to impose stringent sentences upon the rape convicts”. The judge mentioned the December 16 gangrape case in the conviction order and urged the government to introduce harsher law in the cases of rape.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on Brahamjit, who was a sub inspector posted at Jaffarpur Kalan at the time of the incident in 1998, and said, if realised, the amount should be given to the victim. The court slammed the police for making a case in favour of the accused.

"... The victim, a helpless and lonely widow, was pitted against the whole police department. It would have required intense courage for her to continue struggle against the whole police department and fight for justice to her," said judge.

According to the victim’s complaint filed before a metropolitan magistrate Brahamjit kidnapped her from her house on the night of April 12, 1998, and kept her in his custody and raped her repeatedly.
