Delhi has got the world's most advanced and safe CT (Computed Tomography) scanner, that halves a patient's exposure to radiation at no added cost, within two months of its approval in the US.
When used to detect heart diseases, radiation exposure is 1/5th of that of a conventional cardio-angiogram.
"The technology reduces the radiation by two ways: the functions are calculated using much lower radiation and a person has to undergo only one (contrast) CT, which saves the radiation of an entire set," said Dr Harsh Mahajan, who installed the GE Healthcare's 'Discovery CT750-HD Freedom Edition' at the Mahajan Imaging Centre in Hauz Khas 10 days ago.
The cost of a CT scan using the new machine is the same as that for a conventional CT scan. "If at all we decided to increase the cost at some point later, it will not be more than 10%," said Dr Mahajan. The technique is safer, more comfortable and more accurate.
A CT scanner uses digital geometry processing to generate a 3-D image of the inside of the body to identify disorders in the brain, heart, neck, lungs, spine, chest and abdomen. Lowering radiation makes scanning safe, especially for infants, children, women and people with diagnosed disease who have to get frequent follow-up scans. Over the past 10 days, the centre has done 300 CT scans using the new machine.
