Abandoned baby Ishu back with his parents

After a surgery life s finally looking up for little Ishu Kumar Ranjan, the ailing baby who had been abandoned by his parents, reports Sanchita Sharma.

Life is finally looking up for little Ishu Kumar Ranjan, the ailing baby who had been abandoned by his parents in a Gurgaon Hospital two months ago because he had a hole in the heart. After a surgery at Apollo Hospital on June 20, Ishu has not only recovered health but also got his parents back, who now claim they had not abandoned him.

“The baby has recovered very well. He can lead a normal life like any other child with a healthy heart,” said Dr Raja Joshi, senior paediatric cardiac surgeon, congenital cardiac surgery unit, Apollo Hospital.

Ishu was abandoned at Lifeline Hospital by his parents on April 27. The hospital lodged a police complaint and soon Ishu’s face was flashing across TV screens. Apollo Hospital stepped in and offered to do the surgery for free. When the 23-day-old Ishu was brought to Apollo on May 2, he weighed just 1.6 kg. “We discovered he was also premature and severely underweight,” said Dr Vikas Kohli, senior paediatric cardiologist, congenital cardiac surgery unit, Apollo.

The priority, then, was to improve the baby’s health. “We decided not to operate immediately and focus on building his strength by giving him high-calorie nutrition,” said Dr Joshi. Under Dr Anupam Sibal, senior paediatric haemotologist, the baby was put on a special diet that doubled his weight in less than four weeks.
