A day after releasing Dr Sumita Verma on bail, a city court granted bail to her husband, Dr Sanjay Verma, on Thursday. The couple was arrested for torturing and locking their 13-year-old domestic help at their Dwarka house while they went on a holiday to Thailand.
Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) IS Mehta granted bail on the condition that Sanjay will not leave the country without permission and that he will not influence or tamper with prosecution evidence. A middleman named Mahadev, who was arrested for allegedly bringing the girl from her village in Jharkhand, is still in jail.
The court granted bail to Verma on a personal bond of Rs. 25,000 with one surety of the same amount. While opposing the bail plea, the Delhi Police said there was every possibility that the petitioner and the co-accused will use money power to win over the witnesses.
The police told the court about the trafficking racket and how the minor girl was sold to a Delhi-based placement agency by Mahadev.
The girl’s mother had sent her to one Narayan Sahu, who further handed her over to Mahadev. He then brought her to Delhi and handed her over to Mukesh, manager of a placement agency in Punjabi Bagh. The couple had hired the girl through Durga, owner of the agency. A police team is still in Jharkhand looking for Sahu.
