Yet another mishap was averted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport when an Air India aircraft made an emergency landing after the pilot noticed smoke in the cockpit, reports HT Correspondent.

Full emergency was declared at the airport and the AI-111 Delhi-London flight returned to ground safely — with fire brigades, ambulances, ladders and other emergency equipment deployed close to the runway to avert a possible mishap.

There were 115 passengers and 15 crew members aboard the Boeing 777-300 aircraft.
According to senior Air India officials, the aircraft took off from the Delhi airport at 6.50 am. Within a few minutes, the pilot contacted the air traffic control and sought emergency landing of the aircraft.

“There was smoke in the cockpit due to a faulty wire in the flight entertainment system. The moment the pilot noticed the smoke, he alerted the ATC Delhi airport and full emergency was declared. The aircraft was brought back within 30 minutes,” an Air India official said.

“This is certainly not a maintenance issue as the aircraft was a new one. It was a technical snag. We are taking up the matter with Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft,” Air India spokesperson Jitendra Bhargava said told Hindustan Times from Mumbai.

The Boeing 777-300 (ER) was delivered a few months ago and is among the 15 such aircraft ordered by the national carrier.

“The passengers of the aircraft were flown to London in another aircraft at around noon,” an Air India official said.

This is the second emergency landing of a passenger aircraft at the Delhi airport in the past three days .

On Thursday, the nose wheel of a Mumbai-Delhi Go Air aircraft came off when it took off from the Mumbai airport. The aircraft had to make an emergency landing at the
