Protesting against transport department's decision to charge Rs 13,500 for installation of global positioning system (GPS) in auto-rickshaws, the auto-rickshaw unions have threatened to go on strike from October 15.
Union leaders said the previous minister had promised that GPS would be installed for just Rs 7,500.
"They (transport department) are out to loot us. GPS equipment is available in market for just Rs 200-Rs 3,000. We still agreed to pay Rs 7,500. But they are now charging us Rs 13,500. We will also have to pay Rs 2,750 every year as service charges. This is unacceptable," said Rajendra Soni, spokesperson of the Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh.
Union leaders said despite CNG prices going up by Rs 17 per kg in the past two years the government was yet to increase auto and taxi fares.
The auto unions have also been demanding setting of a welfare fund for auto-rickshaw drivers to help them during any kind of emergency.
"We have given 15 days’ notice to the (Delhi) government. If the GPS cost is not reduced, and fare fixation committee is not set up we will go on strike," Soni said. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had rejected the auto unions’ plea against installation of GPS device.
