A bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan refused early hearing to the petition after the union made an urgent mentioning of the matter before the court on Wednesday.

The union has requested the apex court to have a re-look at its previous orders of 1997 and 2002 by which it had asked the state government to stop issuing fresh permits.

The SC had permitted plying of CNG autorickshaws and allowed only 55,000 autos on Delhi roads.

However, a recent report by court-appointed Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA), has advised SC to lift its 12-year-old freeze on granting fresh permits to auto-rickshaws.

The EPCA believes the ban has ‘pushed’ the public transport system into the hands of the financier mafia.
