A five-day-old baby boy was found abandoned at Nizamuddin dargah on Thursday morning. Dressed in a frock, the baby was found crying and lying at a corner at 11.30am by the dargah authorities.

When a string of announcements failed to trace the parents of the newborn, the authorities called the Police Control Room at 1.30am.

“We waited there for some time with the hope that the parents might come to claim the baby. But when there was no response, we took him to the casualty of All
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),” said a police officer, unwilling to be quoted.

“On the face of it, the baby looked healthy. There were no injury or trauma marks to suggest any wrongdoing,” he said.

The baby is admitted at the paediatrics ward of AIIMS and is stable. “The newborn weighs about 2.2kg, which is a somewhat low weight, but not low enough to be labelled sick. He looks fine and is under observation,” said Dr Vinod Kumar Paul, professor and head, paediatrics at AIIMS.
