One family was also bereaved after the pre-monsoon showers. A 12-year-old boy, Chandan, was killed while his two friends — Sanjay and Sonu — were injured when a tree, uprooted following Tuesday night’s thunderstorm and heavy rainfall, fell on them in southeast Delhi’s Sangam Vihar.

The boys lived in Gandhi Camp slum clusters and were playing near the tree at the time of the incident. “They were playing close to the tree that got uprooted due to the strong winds and heavy rains. While the three children were trapped after the tree fell over them, the others managed to escape,” said a police official.

“They were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where Chandan was declared brought dead by the doctors. The other two are recuperating,” the official added.

Meanwhile, as rains lashed the city, rainwater started to stagnate in pools at several places, mostly in south, central and east Delhi. Major waterlogging was reported near ISBT Kashmere Gate, Ashram flyover, Minto Road, AIIMS flyover, CGO, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Jungpura, Bhogal and Gautam Nagar. The culprit: choked storm water drains, even as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) claimed to have desilted 90% of the city’s drains.
