Hazare set the anti-politics tone earlier, saying all parties had become the epitome of corruption, with none having a clean image.

The people, however, expressed their anger against politics with political slogans from Bharat Mata Ki Jai to Inquilab Zindabad shouted with equal gusto.

The motley group is bound by a dislike for corruption and politics.

"They see Hazare as a man living up to the ideals they cherish," said Delhi University psychology teacher Anand Prakas.

Activist Arvind Kejriwal, however, said, "We are not against politicians. We believe in hating the sin, not the sinner."

But before he could say whether politicians are the sinners, the crowd drowned his voice with an emphatic "yes".

DU Law student Richa Priyadarshi and Hindu College student Pawan Kumar felt civil society's participation in drafting the Lokpal Bill would help cleanse the system.
