Five motorcycle-borne armed assailants shot at a businessman and his two sons on Tuesday night, injuring one of them critically, police said.

Prem Chand Goyal (54) and his son, Sandeep Goyal (26) were injured in the incident. Sandeep’s condition is said to be serious.

The incident happened near the Karkardooma Court in Anand Vihar area in East Delhi at around 9:45 pm. The victims Prem Chand Goyal (54) who owns an MTNL distribution shop in Vishwas Nagar was returning back home with his sons on two separate scooters.

Prem Chand and Deepak (31) were on one of the scooters. Deepak was carrying two bags, one containing Rs. 4 lakhs in cash and other recharge vouchers worth Rs. 5 lakhs. Sandeep was following them on another scooter.

“Five masked men on two motorcycles stopped Prem Chand’s scooter and asked them to hand over the bag. In the meantime, Sandeep approached the spot,” said a police officer.

They finally handed over one bag, which contained Rs 4 lakh. But the second bag got stuck and the roobers could not grab it. Agitated, they opened fire and shot two rounds, police said.

The Goyals said a police constable stationed at the nearby court complex rushed to the spot on hearing the gunshots but could not do anything, as his service rifle was jammed.

The police have registered a case against the unknown assailants and are on their lookout. “Some person close to the family knew about the bags containing the cash and coupons. We are investigating the case from every angle,” said a senior police officer.
