The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Piyush Guha, who was sentenced to life imprisonment along with civil rights activist Binayak Sen in a sedition case.

The vacation bench headed by justice GS Singhvi suspended Guha's sentence and directed his release on bail. It directed Guha to furnish a bail bond of R2 lakh and two sureties on R1 lakh each.
Guha, a Kolkata-based businessman, was convicted along with Sen and Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal for colluding with Maoists to establish a network to allegedly “wage a war” against the state. They were all awarded life imprisonment.
He challenged his conviction in the Chhattisgarh high court which refused to grant him bail in the case. The SC had on May 24 issued notice to the state.
Guha's counsel contended before the court that his client had spent four years in jail. He also pointed out that the SC had recently granted bail to Sen.
The SC had granted bail to 61-year-old Sen on April 15 while questioning his conviction and life sentence for sedition.
