BJP today demanded a CBI probe into the death in Lucknow jail of main accused in the killing of a senior Uttar Pradesh medical official suspecting that "he might have been murdered" last night to stop him from naming many high-ups.

"It is a case of murder and not of suicide. We demand that a proper CBI inquiry be done in the suspicious death of Dr Yogendra Singh Sachan. It is a very serious matter and we need to honestly investigate the matter", said BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Sachan, main accused in the murder of Chief Medical Officer B P Singh who was shot dead on April 2, was found dead in the toilet of Lucknow jail hospital last night.

He said "CBI should carry out an honest and transparent probe in the suspicious death of Sachan in a time-bound manner so that all the facts are known."

"The surrounding suspicious circumstances clearly indicate that had Dr Sachan spoken, the names of higher ups would have been exposed", said Prasad, hinting "he might have been eliminated."

BJP also took the occasion to turn the heat on Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, saying "lawlessness and anarchy" prevailed there.
