Brace for water woes as DJB unions may strike work

Scores of employees under the banners of their respective unions will hold a protest demonstration at the DJB headquarters on Tuesday. “We will go ahead with a brain-storming session to plan the future course of action. We are likely to announce the decision to strike work after that,” said Dev Raj Bhadana of the Dilli Jal Mal Karmachari Sangh.

The employees plan to strike work in view of the recent outsourcing of water distribution and other such steps, which are taking the utility towards privatisation and minting money.

“The DJB management has outsourced the Bhagirathi water treatment plant to a private company at R120 crore. Another firm was paid R289 crore for consultancy. It is a scam in the name of privatisation,” said Bhadana.

The DJB had recently outsourced water distribution and revenue collection on a pilot basis in three areas on a PPP basis.
