A group of Delhi Police personnel have allegedly been extorting money from colleagues after catching them on tape while accepting bribes.

The interesting part is that the extortions were being done in the name of 37-year-old Chetan Prakash, a West Delhi property dealer who in the last three years has caught 278 cops taking bribe from bootleggers and Blueline drivers. A majority of the policemen caught on tape were suspended after Prakash submitted the tapes to the Delhi high court.

The extortionists included local goons and some men posted at the Dabri police station in west Delhi, Prakash said. They would threaten to take the clips to the HC if not paid. “It is good to expose corruption but an extortion racket was going on in my name and I wanted to expose it,” he said.

The chance came when a friend managed to steal a laptop from a policeman who was part of the racket. The machine had clips of the “sting operations” carried out by the group.

Prakash handed over the laptop to the court, which on Wednesday ordered a CBI probe into the racket after his lawyer Anil Aggarwal argued that if the police were asked to investigate, they would shield their own.
