Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung Wednesday approved power subsidy of up to Rs 1.20 per unit for Delhi, which will benefit around 37 lakh power consumers in the Capital for the next seven months.

The subsidy will be effective from August 11, when the Delhi Budget was approved by the Centre. The monthly subsidy will be Rs 1.20 per unit for consumption up to 200 units and `0.80 for consumption between 201 and 400 units. Post subsidy, the per unit rate for consumption up to 200 units will be Rs 2.80. The subsidised per unit rate for 201-400 units will be Rs 5.15.
Power subsidy has been a major issue for parties in Delhi, the Sheila Dikshit-government had introduced it first nearly a decade ago. Keeping a pre-poll promise, the AAP government provided a 50% subsidy when it came to power but the scheme lapsed on March 31. Since then no subsidy has been in place.
The latest scheme was announced by finance minister Arun Jaitley while presenting the Delhi budget in Parliament on July 18. And the Delhi BJP unit is already taking credit.
