BRT a corridor of mishaps: HC

The Delhi high court criticised the Capital's controversial bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor on Wednesday, expressing concern over the rising number of accidents and congestion on the stretch between Ambedkar Nagar and the Moolchand flyover in south Delhi.

The Delhi high court criticised the Capital's controversial bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor on Wednesday, expressing concern over the rising number of accidents and congestion on the stretch between Ambedkar Nagar and the Moolchand flyover in south Delhi.

The 5.7-km stretch was opened to traffic in April 2008.

The court told the Delhi government to have a scientific study carried out on the functioning of the corridor by an expert body like the Central Road Research Institute.

A bench of acting chief justice AK Sikri and justice RS Endlaw said, “The viability of the project is indeed under doubt. Who knows, after a study even the expert body might conclude that it needs to be scrapped.”

Raising questions on way the corridor was built, the bench said there was very little space for other vehicles and “worse, the bus stops eat into the road”.

Justice Sikri said he had received complaints from judges of the Saket court about their inability to reach the court on time because of congestion on the corridor.
