CAG reports not final word: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that while CAG reports commanded respect they were not the gospel truth or the final word on an issue, as it was subject to scrutiny by Parliament.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that while CAG reports commanded respect they were not the gospel truth or the final word on an issue, as it was subject to scrutiny by Parliament.

The court’s remarks are important in the wake of recent controversies over CAG reports on coal block allocation and 2G spectrum allocations.

A bench of justice KS Radhakrishnan and justice Dipak Misra, which dismissed a PIL against Cairn-Vedanta deal, said that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) could accept or reject CAG’s report. The bench rejected CAG views on Cairn-Vedanta deal, saying “it is factually and legally incorrect and cannot be accepted”. HTC
