Capital a danger zone for vehicles

Delhi has proved that it’s the country’s crime capital once again. The reason: In 2012, over 14,000 vehicles were stolen in the city. The number equals vehicle thefts in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Bangalore put together. Faizan Haidar reports.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), among all metro cities Delhi topped the list on this front. Bengaluru with 5,090 cases came next, followed by Mumbai at 4,075, Ahmedabad at 2,252 and Hyderabad at 1,370 cases.

The east district of Delhi is particularly prone to such thefts, followed by the southeast and northeast. These districts are border areas and criminals can escape easily to nearby cities of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Delhi Police statistics state that in three years, 44,025 vehicles have been stolen of which only 7,425 could be recovered. So for almost 40 vehicles stolen every day, hardly 10 are recovered. The police’s crime figures state that vehicle thefts account for 26% of the total crime.

“The biggest reason for thefts is the non-availability of parking places in residential areas and commercial complexes,” said a senior police officer added.

But the police did manage to catch more vehicle thieves (3,532) than recovering stolen vehicles (only 2,576) last year.
