“We should hang our heads in shame,” said Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday referring to alleged honour killing.

He agreed with the MPs in the Rajya Sabha that there should be exemplary punishment for those guilty of committing such a crime.
“The vilest crimes are committed in the name of defending the honour of the family or women and we should hang our heads in shame when such incidents take place in India in the 21st century,” he said.
Condemning the incident reported last week in Haryana, Chidambaram said though there was no separate law to deal with the crime of honour killing, these cases have to be treated as murders.
He said the caste panchayat, which did not get recognition under the law, have to be treated as accomplices abetting the honour killing.
