“The season’s first dengue death — of a nine-year-old girl — was reported to us two days ago. Her blood sample tested positive for the infection,” said NK Yadav, director, health, south Delhi Municipal Corporation.

“We have started fogging across the city and one machine has been assigned for each zone. It is normal for such cases to rise during this time of the year as September-October is considered peak season for mosquito-borne diseases,” said Yadav.

“The number of cases has shot up since Monday and we are taking all possible measures to check the spread,” he added.

Apart from the 9-year-old girl’s death on September 24, 64 total cases of dengue have been reported in the city so far. Besides, six cases of chikungunya have been reported this year till now which includes a case of 12-year-old boy whose was the last case reported in July from Safdarjung Hospital.

Though the number of dengue cases has seen a rise since last one week, doctors claim the strain is milder this year and most of those affected do not require hospitalisation.
