The civil hospital said it has been given R43 lakh for setting up a separate facility. A plastic surgeon will be appointed for the new ward which is estimated to cost Rs 1.5 crore.

“We have already received Rs 43 lakh from the union health ministry. We will require about 500-sq-metre space. This ward would be set up close to the MRI centre and ICU,” said Khajan Singh, the principal medical officer of the civil hospital.

At present, patients with minor burn injuries are treated here and at private hospitals in Gurgaon.

Those suffering from more than 30% burn injuries are usually referred to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Private hospitals in Gurgaon only have isolation wards.

Singh said a team of doctors from the health ministry, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Maulana Azad Hospital have visited the site and suggested setting up of burn ward on the first floor.

Singh said a feasibility report will be prepared soon and submitted to the health ministry's team of experts who would visit the hospital again for their final approval.

“When this facility comes up, we would no longer have to refer serious patients to other hospitals,” Singh added.

Umesh Gupta of Umkal group of hospitals said that setting up of a burn ward was not a costly preposition but to run the same is a tedious exercise.

“At present, we have isolation centers where patients with 30% burns are kept separately.”

An official of Medicity Medanta, a private hospital, said it was also planning to set up a dedicated burns ward for its Gurgaon facility.
