Commuters stranded as snag hits Metro

For those travelling on the Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri Metro line, Thursday was a harrowing day. A technical snag during the peak evening hours on the busy 44.65km line 2 hampered Metro services for nearly two hours.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said a technical snag had occured in the overhead electricity (OHE) system on the stretch between Green Park and Sultanpur stations. The OHE provides power to the train for movement.

"Metro services on Line 2 were affected today between Green Park Metro station and Sultanpur Metro station when a portion of the OHE wire broke down near Qutub Minar Metro Station," said a DMRC spokesperson.

The problem in the OHE, one common cause of snags in Delhi Metro, began hampering services at 6.32pm, when trains run at three-minute intervals.

Initially, for half-an-hour, there was no train movement on the stretch between Green Park and Sultanpur. This caused bunching of trains on the corridor and commuters had to suffer a lot due to this.

"Our technical stuff fixed the problem at 8.22 pm and normalcy restored then," said a spokesperson of DMRC.

Services from Jahangirpuri Metro station to Green Park Metro station and from Sultanpur Metro station to Huda City Centre Metro station remained normal, said DMRC officials.

Commuters said the trains ran very slowly on the line with a very low frequency. Many stations including Sultanpur, Chhattarpur, Qutub Minar, Saket, Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas and Green Park became overcrowded due to low frequency and bunching of trains on tracks. "I had to wait for 20 minutes at the overcrowded Chhatarpur metro station to catch a train for Rajiv Chowk. But trains were badly packed," said Joyita Das, a commuter.
