The Congress might not ask Suresh Kalmadi to step at this juncture but a decision on his fate would surely be taken after the event.

With the event barely 58 days away, the priority for both the Congress and the government is to ensure that the games are conducted in a successful manner.

Congress sources said the party has no locus standi on the issue, as it had not nominated Kalmadi to the organising committee, but he was there as the head of the Indian Olympic Association.

“So, the question of party asking him to step down does not arise,” a Congress functionary said.

Though the party has distanced itself from Kalmadi, it is not turning a blind eye to the allegations of corruption in the games projects and would like to go deeper into the matter to bring out the facts.

“All the allegations will be looked into and he (Kalmadi) will be asked to explain everything in detail. But this will be done after the games are over,” the leader said, indicating that there would be a full fledged probe into alleged irregularities.

On its part, the Congress has urged all those involved with games related works to step up their efforts and get the job done to fulfil the country's international commitment on holding the event.
