The has since refuted the allegation. "People are entitled to their opinion, but the fact is that the is not involved in what is taking place in the world's largest democracy neither it has the intention," visiting US Senator John McCain.

Describing Indian democracy as "strong and successful" which will be able to address the current domestic "disputes and conflicts", he said the current protests were "expression of a democratic system, which may not be one of the most pleasant experiences".

On its part, the Congress party appeared struggling to figure out how to contain the damage caused by Alvi's statement on Wednesday that "Annaji is alone. Annaji has no organisation of his own but only a few friends standing by him. The big question is how this movement came into existence? Who is running it? Why is US supporting this movement? The government should probe it"

"Whenever the government is under siege, it tries the foreign hand," said senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad.
