Congress presses for Raman’s resignation

For the first time since the May 25 lethal Maoist attack that wiped out its frontline leadership in Chhattisgarh, the Congress today demanded immediate resignation of chief minister Raman Singh for "failure" to provide adequate security to its rally.

"Raman Singh should quit," party spokesman Bhakta Charan Das said, as he posed a volley of questions to the BJP government on the alleged security lapse that led to the killing of Congress’s state unit chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh and leaders Mahendra Karma and Uday Mudaliar.

However, he steered clear of the demand for imposition of the President’s rule in the state where assembly polls are due in November-December this year, saying the party has not given any thought to this matter.

"We did not want to say anything political as we felt that the CM would himself resign owning responsibility," Das said.

He said the "irresponsible attitude" of the state government has led to a huge loss to democratic values.
