The move to hold the AICC meeting ahead of the Plenary itself comes against the backdrop of suggestions from leaders at the meeting of party Working Committee today was that the elections could be held before Plenary.

With Sonia Gandhi's recent re-election as the party chief for the fourth term, an AICC meeting is on the cards before Diwali while a Plenary session will be held before December 20 this year.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee amid indications that the AICC meeting could be held in some Northern state while the plenary could take place in Mumbai.

The metropolis had hosted the centenary celebrations of the Congress in 1985. The Plenary could be a significant affair given the fact that the Congress was completing 125 years of its inception and had planned a series of regional conferences during the year which had to be cancelled due to various reasons including heavy rains.
