Failure to gather evidence may force the CBI to close its probe into the disproportionate assets case against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The agency is likely to file its closure report in the case by Saturday since during its re-investigation, Yadav’s chartered accountants managed to explain every asset of his that was under the agency’s scanner, according to a source.

The SC had directed the CBI to go ahead with the probe against Yadav and his sons, Akhilesh and Prateek, but dropped the probe against Dimple (Akhilesh’s wife) saying she was not holding any public office.

Exclusion of Dimple hanged the course of the investigation as the alleged disproportionate assets were in her name, according to the source.

The source said Yadav produced evidence showing the assets grew during 1993-2005 because of loans from relatives that were later claimed to be gifts. The inquiry was ordered on March 1, 2007 on public interest litigation by advocate Vishwanath Chaturvedi.
