Taking strong exception to the absence of the Delhi police commissioner during a discussion on the city's law-and-order situation, members of the Opposition as well the treasury bench created a furore in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday.

Cutting across party lines, the legislators condemned Delhi police chief Y.S. Dadwal's act as "contempt to the House". Legislators said the commissioner was informed about the discussion at least a week ago and his presence was "a must" while discussing the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the Capital.
The discussion, which was to begin after a break at 4.30 p.m., was first adjourned for 30 minutes and was later postponed for Monday morning when Dadwal failed to turn up.
Instead, the top cop sent his next-in-command Neeraj Kumar (special commissioner, administration) to the discussion. BJP leader Jagdhish Mukhi refused to initiate the discussion in absence of the police commissioner.
Mukhi was supported in his protest by many Congress leaders as well.
