DDA apartment in Kalkaji gets a lift

Earlier, a lift could be installed in a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) apartment only if all flat owners gave no-objection certificates (NOC). But last year, the DDA had made changes in the norms, allowing the installation of lifts if a majority of the flat owners agreed.

"This facility will benefit the elderly residents suffering from knee or joint problems. Now that one lift has been installed here, other flat owners can also get it installed in their blocks," said RK Sareen, a resident of Nehru Apartments.

This is the first instance of a group of residents getting together to install a lift after the DDA relaxed the rules.

The consent of the owners of flats on the ground floor is not required as a lift does not help them. Those who want to get lifts installed need to apply to the DDA for a NOC or the respective municipal corporation in areas where the services have been transferred to civic agencies. So far, the DDA has not installed lifts in its buildings.

The land owning agency had agreed to relax the norms after the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) in Alaknanda asked for permission to put up lifts for their group housing flats.
